Liquid Dreams on the Coast – Liqucity Festival takes off in The Netherlands

// 2017-06-13

It’s unbelievable, but it’s true. And it cannot be any cooler than this. There is festival strictly about liquid drum and bass. Moreover one of the biggest liquid dnb label organises it. Liquicity Festival propels you to another galaxy on 8-9 July, where there is no intrigue, politics or any other earthly issues, only pure, crystal clear liquid dnb. We were thinking of compiling a neat selection of who is worth checking out on the fest, but we asked Hungary’s biggest export commodity in liquid dnb, Raise Spirit – who is releasing on the Liquicity label – to do it for us.

Who would I see?

The problem is that the line-up is incredibly strong, so it’s very difficult to select only a few. When I started listening to dnb 5-6 years ago, the Brookes Brothers, Logistics, Mind Vortex and Hybrid Minds were the ones that directed towards this genre. Moreover Hybrid Mind’s tracks made me want to create the kind of music they were producing. Absolute idols for me. Who I really would like to see this year, well first of all DJ Marky, he has enormous technical skills, but he is such great person, very positive all the time, and has massive energy behind the decks. Based on recent publications I would definitely check out Dimension or Alix Perez. I really dig the new minimalistic approach of Alix. He has been collaborating with Spectrasoul and that turned out to be excellent. As far as I know he stopped producing dnb for a while and wrote very different things, but I’m really happy he found his way back to dnb.

Old favourites

The Brookes Brothers in definitely one of my old time favourites can’t stop listening to their tunes. I heard Lenzman a while ago, but a month ago he played before me in Budapest, and gave a very impressive set, I would definitely listen to him again. And there is Logistics, LSB, High Contrast… but one of absolute favs is Technimatic, who presented such kind of novelty in the genre like nobody before. I could just listen to them all day long. Their last album first was nothing special, but once I was travelling on the train and it hit me with a kind of life-evaluating feeling that taught me to appreciate the disc. I grew up listening to a lot of Sub Focus, he was a really innovative artist who was one of the guys responsible to open dnb up, made it possible for the different sub-genres to emerge. I have massive respect for him; however his latest tracks do not really move me much.

Up-and-coming artists

From the up-and-coming stars I would check out Dualistic, who is dear friend of mine. We could realise our collaboration yet, but he has been sending me stuffs which made really eager towards his sets. GLXY’s and Pola&Bryson’s sets could be very interesting, since they have recently switched to Shogun Audio, which is Friction’s label, so would be good to see how they have changed. Their new releases are fantastic. Oh and there is Whiney, he has great tracks as well and he also started releasing at Liquicity, but has gone on recently to Hospital Records I think. He made great tracks with Keeno, who to my greatest surprise is not in the line-up. Oh well we can’t have everybody I guess.

When do I expect to see them?

Beside Alix perez, the deep dnb linewill be probably represented by Whiney, whose set will probably turn to neurofunk with more monotonous drum and basslines. If not until the end but I definitely think he will play some of these things. Just like Dimension, he is also known for heavier beats, but he really likes this kind of singing, a bit disco-like dnb, so I can’t imagine him to play in the warm-up phase. I would put him around 1-2 am, for the dawn the deep guys, but for the sunrise a Hybrid Minds or a Technimatic set would be awesome. The best choice for the warm-up period could be DJ Marky for me.

The MCs

DRS and Lingusitics are great, but I would like to highlight Mota. He just made a track with June Miller, which absolutely worth checking out. He can create an amazing vibe, spits water to the crowd and can get the people moving like no one. Also MVE is also very special; he not only raps, but sings as well. He is a very talented artist; he produces songs and has great skills on the piano.

Useful info

The festival will take place around the picturesque little lake by Noord-Scwarwoude, which very close to Alkmaar. You can reach the fest with shuttle buses from Alkmaar, which is located on this lovely little peninsula, so basically the whole fest is surrounded by a lot of liquids. The festival has a very wallet-friendly approach to food and drinks. You are allowed to take in your own food and beverages as long as your liquids are sealed in plastic bottles and your booze is not stronger than 15%. Of course there will ample amount of food trucks if you don’t want to take your own food. The tickets are not expensive either, compared to other Western European fests; the two day passes cost €84 which includes the camping fares as well.
