Kala: A történetre figyelünk, amit a zenével mondani szeretne

Interjú a macedón-szlovén Kalával, a psytrance legelőremutatóbb, legaktuálisabb ága, a forest/nightpsy egyik úttörőjével, aki egyik fő headlinere az Epochának. (Angol verzióban is!) Az irányzat legprogresszívebb hazai fesztiváljának, a június 8-10. között tartandó buli előtt beszélgettünk vele. (A magyar nyelvű interjú után Kala válaszait és a kérdéseinket angolul is közöljük.)

Szlovéniában élsz, eredetileg Észak-Macedóniából származol. Tudjuk, hogy a kilencvenes évek elég sok megpróbáltatást hoztak az egykori Jugoszláviának. Abban a kemény politikai és etnikai környezetben egy olyan műfaj, mint a psytrance, hogyan tudott megjelenni és megvetni a lábát? Mik a jellemző különbségek az akkori és a mostani szcéna között?
– Ahogy mondod, Szkopjéban születtem 1986-ban, így amikor a Jugoszlávia szétesett, nagyon fiatal voltam, szóval, nem nagyon emlékszem sokra. Szlovéniában az ország méreteihez képest a szcéna erős. Görögországból az idősebb dj-k vinileket és cédéket tudtak szerezni, így tudtak goát is játszani. Elég sok ember jött össze akkoriban, a szomszédos országokból is hozzánk jártak partyzni! Szlovénia nagyon sokban hasonlít erre, talán nincs akkora hagyománya a psytrance-nek, de mostanában azért virágzásnak indult.

Egyáltalán, ha Szlovéniába látogat valaki, milyen fesztiválokat és partykat ajánlanál neki?
– Ha hozzánk jössz, érdemes megnézni a mi Forestdelic-estünket Ljubljanában, de a Mamis Magic partyjai is említésre méltó, és persze nyáron az ország egyetlen, de nagyon menő fesztiválját, a Chagadelia által szervezett Dropsot.

A Forestdelic Records zenéit elsősorban az egyedi hangzása teszi az egyik leginkább tánctérközpontú kiadóvá napjainkban. Hogyan született meg a projekt?
– 2011-ben alakultunk, eleinte egy célunk volt: partykat szervezni. Persze már akkoriban is írtam zenéket, és persze nem nagyon volt olyan label, ahova illettek volna a zenéim. Ekkor kezdtem el azon gondolkozni, hogy lemezkiadóvá is kéne alakulni a partyszervezés mellett. Ez 2013-ban lett valóság a Wicked Gail’s Trail című válogatásunkkal, ami olyan jó fogadtatásra talált, hogy a folytatás mellett döntöttünk.

Mikor kerültél kapcsolatba a zenével? Tanultál esetleg valamilyen hangszeren? Mikor kezdett el az elektronikus zene, azon belül a psytrance érdekelni? Kik vagy mik inspirálnak, hogy ilyen zenét készíts?
– A bátyámon keresztül ismerkedtem meg ezzel a stílussal, ő is ismert a szcénában Lunardeco néven. Hat évvel idősebb nálam, és ’96 óta, a macedón szcéna indulása óta a része ennek. Eleinte nagyon nem szerettem a psy-t, fiatalabb koromban kifejezetten untatott… De ahogy telt az idő, egyre jobban beszippantott! Egyik első kedvencem Hallucinogen Derangerje volt, nagyon sokat hallgattam. Nem tanultam hangszeren; amikor 2006-ban Szlovéniába költöztem, elvégeztem egy komoly hangmérnökképzést, majd miután végeztem, találtam egy jó munkát egy rádiónál, szóval, ebben maradtam. 2013-ban hagytam ott, azóta minden erőmmel a Forestdelic Recordsra és a Kala projektre fókuszálok. Jelenleg a psytrance a prioritás, de próbálkozom más zenékkel is. Inspirációt főleg a természet ad, és persze a macedon népzene, ahol nagyon jó ritmusszekciók adnak ötleteket.

Régen elektronikus zenét készíteni kevesek kiváltsága volt, míg manapság egy számítógéppel bárki képes zenét összerakni. A kiadó fejeként biztos rengeteg zenét kapsz. Mikor találsz egy új producert, mi alapján kezded követni a munkásságát? Amikor leszerződtetsz valakit, van valamilyen szempontrendszer, ami alapján eldöntitek, hogy passzol-e a zenei világba, amit képviseltek?
– Igazad van, manapság elég egy pc a zenéléshez. Látom, ahogy a fiatalok a gép mellett nőnek föl, szóval, az a fő eszközük, és valóban, sokkal egyszerűbb az ötletek megvalósítása, mint régebben volt. De sajnos ez azzal is jár, hogy sokan mindössze már eleve kész számokat, a kedvenceik hangzását próbálják lemásolni. Mi, amikor művészeket keresünk, elsősorban arra figyelünk, amit a zenével mondani szeretne: a történetre. Másodsorban a produkció maga, és végül természetesen a személyiség, ami dönt. Nagyon fontosnak tartom, hogy harmónia legyen a csapatban. Különösebb szempontja nincs annak, hogy hogyan kell szólnia a zenének, és most megint közel állunk pár új producer csatlakozásához.

Mik a kedvenc party helyszíned, körülményeid, melyek hozzásegítenek a saját mércéd szerinti tökéletes előadáshoz? Mi számít jobban, a környezet, vagy mondjuk a résztvevők létszáma? Ha megszervezhetnéd álmaid partyját, milyennek képzeljük?
– Fú, rengeteg kedvencem van… Az egyik legjobb élményem a Chillout Planet volt Oroszországban. Ott minden egyben volt. Egyébként ha jó helyen van valami, akkor a hangrendszer szempont még, jó hang nélkül értelmetlen csinálni bármit. A dekó is fontos, és ha mindezek egyben vannak, már csak boldog emberek kellenek egy jó bulihoz. Álmaimban egy Forestdelic-fesztivál szerepel, lehetőleg valami gyönyörű macedón hegy tetején, hogy minél többen megismerjék az ország kultúráját.

A tavalyi Ozora kiemelkedő szettjei voltak a Forestedelic Recordséi, idén pedig Yudhisthira és a vele közös liveact, az Anthill lesz a maintstage-en. A magyar Dr Space tagja is a kiadónak (akivel a ’17-es Ozora-cikksorozatunk részeként készítettünk nagyinterjút), és ennek hála volt Budapesten Forestdelic Night is, szóval, mondhatjuk, gyakori vendégek vagytok Magyarországon. Mi volt az első gondolatod, amikor meghallottad az Epocha Lake koncepcióját? Melyik fesztivált szereted jobban: a nagyobb tömegeket mozgató, Ozora-léptékűeket, vagy a családiasabb, Epocha-szerű hangulatúakat?
– Tavaly a Kala projektemmel léptem föl, és igazán remek visszajelzések jöttek, így idén Ogi Yudhisthirával ketten megyünk, és ő külön is fellép majd. A budapesti partyról is remek emlékeink vannak, ha jól emlékszem, talán az első Labirhytm-buli volt, amit Miska aka Dr Space és Tsubi (vele is a ’17-es Ozora előtt interjúztunk – a szerk.) szervezett. Őszintén szólva Miska nagyon fontos tagja a csapatunknak, mindig kész arra, hogy az új számainkat tesztelje élesben, vagy újabb ötleteket adjon. Pont tőle hallottam először az Epocháról, és egyből tetszett, amit hallottam. Szeretem az ilyen kisebb fesztiválokat, a kevesebb ember ellenére mindig hatalmas energiák áradnak a tánctérről. Ami külön öröm, hogy nagyon közel van Szlovéniához, így minden szlovén psytrancernek is üzenem, hogy jöjjenek, és csapjuk egy hatalmas közös bulit!

As far as i know you are living in Slovenia but originally you are from Macedonia. I know the ’90s was a really hard period for the region and all the nations of the ex-Yugoslavia. In such a political and ethnic environment, when was the psytrance scene appearing and growing there? What are the main differences of the scene of then and now? If someone is visiting Slovenia, what are the psytrance related festivals or parties which you recommend us not to miss?
– Yes as you said… I’m originally from Macedonia, born in Skopje 1986. I was young when Yugoslavia was going apart, so I don’t remember much about that. What I can say that for such a small country we had a really good scene. Greece was the place where most of the old djs were able to got some vinyls and CDs so they could play goatrance music. Honestly, it was a pretty big scene for that time, many people from neighbour countries also were visiting parties in Macedonia. Slovenia is pretty much the same, however, it has not a big history of psytrance but at least it is in a good bloom for sure. If someone is going over Slovenia, he/she can visit some of our party sessions in Ljubljana host by Forestdelic Records, also can visit Mamis Magic Party and summer time is also good to visit our only one and very prospective music festival “Drops” hosts by Chagadelia.

You are one of the main alchemists of Forestdelic Records, which has a unique sound that makes the Forestdelic project one of the most dancefloor orientated labels of these days. How was the Forestdelic project founded? If you have to describe the sound of your label with only a couple of words, what would you choose? („Psychedelic” is not an option for now.)
– Forestdelic was founded in 2011, and the main goal at that time was just to organise parties before all. That days I was making music for sure, but I didn’t have any label which can basically fit to my music so I came to the idea to make a record label out from our party organization. It happened in 2013 that we have been released our first compilation, Wicked Gail’s trail, and from that point we were getting good feedbacks on it so we decided to continue the work, we started growing and bringing some delicious music to our scene. If I have to describe the sound and I can’t use Psychedelic, hmmmmmm I can say: A uniqe piece of psy music where the story matters.

When and how did you start getting familiar with music in general? Did you study any instruments when you were younger? What was that point in your life when you started to focus on electronic music and psytrance? Who were the ones inspiring you to create this kind of music? What are the triggers which give you energy to keep it still doing?
– I started getting familiar with this music thanks to my brother who is still involved in the scene, he’s known as “Lunardeco”. He’s older then me with 6 years and he’s still in this scene since 1996, the early beginnings in Macedonia. At the beginning I must admit that I didn’t like this kind of music so much. When he started to listen it, it was a bit annoying to me… but how was the time passing I started really to like it. One of my first ads and music I listened a lot was „Deranger” from Hallucinogen. I didn’t study any instrument, when I have moved to Slovenia in 2006, I have studied audio engineering at SAE University. After I finished there, I found a quite nice job at a radiostation so I stayed there. I quit that job in 2013 and started to work with full throttle on the Forestdelic Records and my Kala project. For now, I am focusing on pytrance, but in my free time (when I hardly get some) I am also trying to make some other kind of music. The inspiration mostly comes from the amazing nature around the place where I live and also from Macedonian ethno music, where you can find very good rhythmic sections.

If we compare the electronic music scene in general we could see that in the old good days creating music and with machines was like a privilege, but now, almost everybody is able to create music with computers it is only dependent on the efforts. I am sure that you are listening lots of music from new producers, what are you focusing on when you are starting to keep your eyes on an artist? Do you have guidelines at the label regarding to the music which will be probably fitting in your musical vision?
– Yes, it is true that these days making music is much easier than it was before, everything what you need is only a computer. I see how the young generations are growing up near to the computers so it is like the main tool to them. Also, I have to note that it is much generic music, I like to say generic like many young guys trying to copy the music of the their idols and they like to sound like their idols. If we are looking for other artists in order to sign him/her to our label we are mainly considering the story what the artist wanted to tell us with the music, then comes the production itself. Of course, the personality of the guys is very important, we want to keep a good harmony in the label. We haven’t got any guidelines regarding how should a music sound. At this moment, we are really close to sign other artists in order to join us. By this, we can work on our story much easier.

Which are your favourite party locations, where – let say – you are able to perform in the way you really want to? Does it depend more on the quality of the sound or more on the environment and the crowd there? If you would be able to organize the Party of your Dreams, how should we expect it? In case you have different preferences for the two options please share both.
– I have many favourite party locations, but one of my favourite is the “Chillout Planet Festival” in Russia. I think there is all together in a package. What is important to me at first is a good location, then it must have a good sound system there (if not, the party is pointless to do). The nice decoration is important as well for better feeling. If all this worked out, I guess people would be happy and the crowd would be super nice. My dream party… a small Forestdelic Festival on the top of one very beautiful Macedonian mountain. Limited edition, with full of the experience of Macedonian culture and music.

Last year the Forestdelic shows were one of the most powerful shows at Ozora. This year you are going to perform as Anthill with Yudhisthira. On the top of this, there was the Forestdelic Night with the Labirhythm Series, and Dr Space is part of the Forestdelic Family, so we can say that you are really frequent guests in our country. What was your first thought when hearing about the concept of Epocha Lake? In general, do you prefer to play to bigger crowd like in Ozora or in festivals to smaller ones, more like family gigs?
– Ah thanks for the nice words. Yes, last year I performed just as Kala on the Main Stage at Ozora festival and I got very nice feedback, this summer we are coming back with Ogi “Yudhishthira” to play an Anthill set and he plays his own as Yudhisthira as well. We also had a super experience in Budapest, I think on the first Labirhythm party organised by Miska and Tsubi. Yes, Dr Space is a big part from our label, I must say this. He is always here to share some ideas with us, always testing our tunes at the dance floors where he plays and always gives a good support. So we are very lucky to have him. First time I heard about Epocha festival was last year again from Dr Space, since he plays there and told me that it is a very very good festival. Like a smaller type of festival where there is good energy and very nice people. Also it is very near to Slovenia, what is super nice. In this I’m inviting all psytrance music lovers from Slovenia to come there and have some fun with us! I’m looking very forward to this one really, to experience this proper Hungarian lake festival. After all, thank you very very much for this interview, you’ve made such interesting questions, it was a pleasure answering.
